New to Yoga? Welcome.

We often hear people who are new to yoga say “I’m not flexible enough”, “I won’t understand what the teacher is saying”. While we understand these concerns, yoga will meet you exactly where you are, not where you think you should be.

At Flourish Yoga + Wellbeing in Fishers, we've spent over a decade welcoming beginners into our studio. You won't be the only person who's never done yoga before. You won't be the only one who can't touch their toes. And you definitely won't be judged for either.

Yoga isn't about perfection. It's about showing up, listening to your body, and coming home to yourself. Let's get you started.

"You're Probably Wondering..."

Do I have to be flexible to do yoga?

No. Flexibility is something yoga builds, not a prerequisite. Many of the most dedicated yogis started exactly where you are- uncertain, tight, ready to try something new. Our Gentle Yoga classes and Intro to Yoga series are specifically designed for bodies that are just beginning to explore movement and breath. You'll find modifications for every pose, and your teacher will honor whatever your body needs in that moment.

I'm worried I'll be the oldest/youngest person in class.

You won't be. Yoga students span every age, background, and life stage. Whether you're 25 or 75, recovering from an injury or training for a marathon, exploring yoga for the first time or returning after years away, there's a class and a community for you at Flourish.

I've never meditated or done breathwork. Will I be lost?

Meditation and breathwork are skills, not talents you either have or don't. Our teachers guide you through every step. Beginner classes start with the fundamentals- simple breathing practices that calm your nervous system and ground you in the present moment. By your second or third class, these tools will feel natural.

What if I have an injury or chronic pain?

Please tell your teacher before class. Our instructors are experienced with injuries, limited mobility, and chronic conditions. They can offer variations so you stay comfortable and safe. Yoga can actually be deeply healing. It's just about finding the right class and the right modifications for your body.

Is hot yoga okay for beginners?

Hot yoga (our vinyasa classes are heated to 100 degrees) can be intense, even for experienced practitioners. We recommend starting with our non-heated Gentle Yoga or non-heated Vinyasa Flow classes if you're new, or working gently into a warm Vinyasa Flow (heated to 90 degrees). Once you've built some familiarity with poses and your breath, you can explore heated classes when you feel ready. There's no rush.

Where to Start: Beginner-Friendly Classes at Flourish

Gentle Yoga - Slow Paced and Restorative

This is slow-paced, restorative yoga designed exactly for people beginning their practice. You'll move mindfully through basic poses, learn proper alignment, and discover what your body is capable of. Gentle Yoga also works beautifully if you're managing pain, recovering from injury, or simply prefer a slower pace. Classes are offered multiple times per week, both in-studio and via livestream.

Non-Heated Vinyasa Flow - Dynamic and Accessible

If you want to explore movement with more rhythm, our room-temperature Vinyasa Flow is the next step. Vinyasa means breath linked with movement. You'll flow at your own pace, and your teacher will offer modifications for every pose. It's invigorating without being overwhelming.

Intro to Yoga Series - Learn the Fundamentals in a Group Setting

We offer a dedicated Intro to Yoga series specifically for beginners. This small-group format lets you ask questions, learn poses in a low-pressure environment, and build a foundation before jumping into regular all-levels classes. This is often the most popular choice for people taking their first steps into yoga for good reason. You'll leave with confidence and an idea of what kind of classes you’d like to take.

Warm Somatic Flow - Healing & Grounding

This all-levels class is heated to 90 degrees and designed to help you connect deeply with your body while regulating your nervous system. Somatic practices release stress and tension that lives in the body. This is perfect if you're carrying anxiety, grief, or just the weight of modern life.

Your First Class: What to Expect

Before You Come

  • Arrive 10–15 minutes early. This gives us time to welcome you, check you in, and show you where to set up. It also takes the rush out of your first experience.

  • Wear soft clothes you can move in. You don't need special yoga gear, just something comfortable.

  • Bring a water bottle. You'll sweat, and staying hydrated matters. (We have a water filling station and cups if needed!)

When You Arrive
Your teacher will ask if you're new and may check in about any injuries or concerns. They're here to support you, not judge you. We have props (blocks, bolsters, straps, blankets) available to assist in your poses.

During Class
Your teacher will guide you through poses step by step. You'll hear cues about alignment, breath, and how to modify poses for your body. If something doesn't feel right, listen to your body. You can always take rest anytime during class. There's no such thing as falling behind or getting it wrong, yoga is your own practice.

After Class
You'll lie down for a few minutes of rest and integration (called Savasana). This is when the magic happens. Your nervous system relaxes, your mind quiets, and you integrate everything you've just experienced. It's not sleep, but it feels like deep rest. You'll leave class calmer, clearer, and often surprised at how good you feel.

What to Bring

  • Your yoga mat (or borrow one from our studio)

  • A towel (especially for warm/hot classes)

  • Water bottle

  • Comfortable clothes (leggings, shorts, t-shirt or tank top- anything you can move freely in)

  • Your body and your breath (that's all you really need)

We have blocks, bolsters, straps, blankets, and eye pillows available if you don't have them at home.

A Few More Questions?

What's the cancellation policy?
We ask that you cancel at least an hour before class so we know to expect one fewer student. If you cancel within an hour, you'll be charged for a class. Life happens, just reach out same-day if you can't make it.

Can I do yoga virtually?
Yes. Most of our classes are offered both in-studio and via livestream. When you register online, you'll receive a link to join from home. Set up a beautiful space, have props nearby, and practice from your living room.

Will I ever feel comfortable in a real class after starting with Intro to Yoga?
Absolutely. The Intro series builds your foundation so you feel confident in all-levels classes. You'll know what to expect, you'll understand the language teachers use, and you'll have strategies for modifications. By your third or fourth class, you'll feel like you belong.

What if I want to go deeper?
After you've practiced for a while, you might feel called to deepen your yoga journey. We offer workshops, special series, 200-hour and 300-hour teacher training, and yoga retreats. For now, just focus on showing up to class and noticing how your body and mind change over weeks and months.
